The DREADMOOR demo walkthrough follows a connected route: reach Betsy and Sons, earn access to the dry dock, improve your boat, and open The Throat. Most apparent roadblocks belong to that quest chain, so skipping a conversation can leave the next tool or blueprint unavailable. This guide follows the demo route documented in Mr. Feudal's Steam Next Fest playthrough, with the ending covered below.
Reach the trading post and start fishing
Search the opening house before boarding the boat. Drawers and loose supplies provide materials such as Metal Plates, Rope, and Coral Fiber. Take the melee tool from the body and break the wooden barricade to leave.
At the boat, tune the radio until you reach the traders. Their directions are straightforward: sail west to the trading post and enter Betsy and Sons. This establishes the settlement as your first working base, rather than sending you straight into the wider wetlands.
After the initial conversation and Essence treatment, take the bunkhouse key and move Malcolm's chest into the lodging. Patch the hole in the wall with the nearby sheet metal, then rest as the quest requests. In the morning, take the fishing rod from the bunkhouse and meet the merchants on the platform behind the dry dock.
The recorded demo asks for five Snappers. Use Earthworms at the pier. Once a fish bites, pull opposite its movement to drain its stamina, watch line tension, and reel it close enough to land. Finish the merchant conversation after catching the required fish; merely filling the hold does not complete the dialogue step.
Repair John's still and unlock the dry dock
Gil and Bozer direct you to John the Fifth, the engineer. He will not open the dry dock until his damaged moonshine still is repaired.
His material route sends you to three nearby sources:
- Coral Fiber: harvest coral on Angler's Island with the axe.
- Bug Slime: retrieve the blue slime-producing beetles from rocks behind the trading post using the hook gun.
- Metal materials: recover the iron barrels and other suitable salvage nearby.
Use your live quest list for quantities. The transcript identifies the material sources, but it does not reliably expose every recipe number.
Before sailing for supplies, follow the traders' fuel introduction: process the Snappers into meat, feed the fuel larva, and refuel the boat at the pump. Return to repair the still, then speak to John again to receive the dry-dock key.
Inside the dock, repair the fuse box and turn on the lights. Bring the boat inside, use the lift, and follow the cleaning and repair objectives. Raise the boat to the second level for cleaning, pressurize the system, remove the polyps with the cleaning tool, then lower it to the first level for the repair-tool task. Load the repair tool with Bug Slime and patch the damaged sections before reporting back to John.
Get scales, hull protection, and the upgraded engine
The next stage links fishing directly to boat upgrades. Ask the merchants about Chromatic Scales, obtain the Wind-up Tin blueprint, and craft the lure at the workbench. Follow the peaceful-fish objective, catch the three Softgrazers required in the demo, and process them in the grinder.
Return to John with that stage complete. He provides Scraps of Knowledge and directs you to research hull protection and the upgraded engine. Research unlocks the blueprints; you still need materials, the lathe, and physical installation at the boat.
Craft and install the requested hull-protection pieces. If Coral Fiber or Bug Slime runs short, return to the nearby collection sites rather than assuming the research purchase supplied the finished armor.
For the engine, speak to John and then Gil and Bozer about the Carburetor. The merchants provide the predatory-fish lure blueprint and request Harpooners. Use Rainbow Fin bait at the marked predator habitat, retrieve the lure to attract a fish, and land the required catch. Sell these fish to the merchants instead of grinding them, then buy the Carburetor.
Back at the dry dock, raise the boat, remove the old engine, and place it in module storage. Craft the upgraded engine at the lathe and fit it into the engine slot. Report the installation to John. Follow the accompanying axe-upgrade objective at the rigging workbench in Betsy before leaving for The Throat.
Repair The Throat and open the route out
Refuel before the next voyage. At The Throat, find the nearby fuel can, fill the generator, and use its starting interaction. Trying the gate controls advances the objective to inspecting the damaged system.
The repair sequence involves a replacement gear, missing waterwheel buckets, and a burnt-out pump coil. Search the structure and nearby working areas for the parts, carry the gear and buckets to their matching installation points, and use the Thermal Coil for the pump repair.
Once repairs are complete, use the symbol-linked sluice controls to direct water so both wheels turn. Changes can affect more than one channel, so check the resulting flow after each adjustment. The recorded player experiments with the controls; there is no verified universal button order to reproduce here.
Return to the gate controls after both wheels are running. Open the passage, board the boat, and follow the departure objective. The documented demo then reaches its completion screen.
The official DREADMOOR Steam page listed Early Access as planned for November 9, 2026 when checked on November 3. This route covers the demo; it is not a walkthrough of unreleased Early Access regions or every optional collectible.
FAQ
Why is the dry dock locked?
John gives you the key after you repair his moonshine still and finish the follow-up conversation. Visiting the dock before that quest does not bypass the lock.
Should I process every fish I catch?
No. Snappers and Softgrazers are processed during specific objectives, while the Harpooners in the Carburetor chain need to be sold to the merchants.
Does opening The Throat require only the generator?
No. You also need to repair the gear, bucket, and pump-related damage, then arrange water flow so both wheels turn before using the gate controls.
Is this the same route as the early playtest?
Do not assume so. Older playtest recordings contain different opening tasks and recipes. Use the current demo's journal and recipe book when a count or ingredient differs.
