Start with the settlement, not a long expedition
Your first useful upgrade in DREADMOOR is getting the settlement working for you. Follow the radio west to Betsy and Sons, complete the fishing introduction, and help John the Fifth reopen the dry dock. That sequence gives you access to the repair and crafting equipment needed for longer trips.
This beginner route follows the Steam Next Fest demo described in Mr. Feudal's player experience, with the demo-labelled dialogue recording as support. It does not use the different opening and fish quotas from the earlier playtest. As of November 3, 2026, the main game's Early Access launch is still planned for November 9; the official DREADMOOR Steam page separates that release from the demo.
Before leaving the opening house, search its drawers for materials, collect the melee tool, and clear the barricade. Return to the boat and tune the radio. The conversation directs you west to the trading post; dock and ring the shop bell.
Finish your first fishing job
The merchants provide essence and a bunkhouse key. Take the chest to the lodging, use the nearby sheet iron to patch the hole in the wall, and complete the sleep objective. The next morning's instructions lead you to the simple fishing rod and the platform behind the dry dock.
Use Earthworms to catch five Snappers in the documented demo introduction:
- Cast into the splashing fish area.
- Set the hook when the bite prompt appears.
- Pull opposite the fish's movement to tire it.
- Watch line tension rather than reeling continuously.
- Reel during the exhausted window and land the fish when prompted.
The merchants then explain that these fish are useful for processing. Visit John the Fifth when directed; he holds the dry-dock key but wants his moonshine still repaired first.
Make the boat ready before roaming
John points you toward Coral Fiber on Angler's Island, adhesive beetles on the rocks behind the trading post, and nearby iron barrels. Process the introductory Snappers, feed the fuel larva as instructed, and fill the boat before the collection trip. Cut coral with the axe and retrieve indicated beetles and debris with the hook gun.
Return to repair the still and collect the dry-dock key. Inside the dock, restore the fuse box and lighting, bring in the boat, and follow the lift objectives. The recorded sequence raises the boat to the second level for cleaning, then lowers it to the first level for repairs using the repair tool and Bug Slime. Report back to John after completing the work.
Keep scavenged materials available: reaching the dock does not mean every later component is already affordable.
Follow the upgrade chain toward the Throat
After repairs, the merchants supply the Wind-up Tin blueprint. Catch three Softgrazers, process them for Chromatic Scales, and speak to John. His Scraps of Knowledge let you study the hull-protection and upgraded-engine blueprints.
Craft and install the requested hull protection. John then sends you back to the merchants for a Carburetor. For this step, catch three Harpooners with Rainbow Fin bait, sell the carcasses rather than grinding them, and buy the part. The recorded demo price is 50 coins. Complete the engine-removal, crafting and installation objectives in order.
The next major destination is the Throat, where the demo's generator, damaged machinery and water-flow puzzle lead toward its ending. Before sailing, refuel and consider sleeping until daylight. The introductory dialogue explicitly warns that an unprepared boat is vulnerable at night.
FAQ
Should I sail away immediately after arriving?
Complete the settlement introduction first. It unlocks fishing, repairs, blueprints and the engine progression used by the documented demo route.
Why does an older guide ask for only three Snappers?
The earlier playtest shown by CrypticFox requests three. The demo-labelled recording used here requests five; follow your current quest counter.
Do all fish go into the grinder?
No. The Softgrazer step needs processing, while the later Harpooner step requires selling intact fish to fund the Carburetor. Check the objective before processing a catch.
